German Munoz Lopez is charged with two counts of attempted murder, records show. He is held in the Marshall County Jail with bail set at $1 million.

Lopez is accused of firing at two cops who were investigating a report of shots fired early Thursday morning at Kilpatrick Mobile Home Park, police Chief Jamie Smith said. The officers encountered a group of people as they were walking through the park. One person, now identified as Lopez, fired at the police, Smith said. Lopez was taken into custody as a person of interest Thursday. He was formally charged today.

No injuries were reported in the exchange of gunfire, the chief said.

The two officers are on paid leave as the State Bureau of Investigations probes the case.

"It's kind of a decompression period for them," Smith said Thursday about the officers.

The chief said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued a "detainer" for Lopez. That means even if he posts the $1 million bail, the jail staff will be asked to hold him 48 hours to give ICE time to detain the suspect.
