FWP to hold meeting on chronic wasting disease, special winter h - ABC FOX Montana Local News, Weather, Sports KTMF

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will hold a public meeting in Joliet Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, to talk about chronic wasting disease, or CWD, and a special deer hunt this winter.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Joliet Community Center. During the meeting, FWP wildlife officials will make presentations on CWD and the special hunt and answer questions.

CWD is a progressive, fatal disease affecting the central nervous system of mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk and moose. Geographically it is a slow-moving disease. However, left unmanaged, it could result in long-term population declines within affected herds.

Five mule deer and one white-tailed deer doe harvested by hunters in Carbon County recently tested positive for CWD – the first ever in the state’s wildlife populations. As a result, FWP has proposed a special two-month hunt to gather information about the distribution and prevalence of CWD in south central Montana. Thursday the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission will decide specifics of the hunt – including numbers of licenses, harvest quotas, hunt boundaries and other rules.
